Signature journey

Five centuries of history

Few cities reveal themselves as generously as Quito. This full-day journey moves through five centuries of history in one of Latin America's most beautifully preserved capitals, from its pre-Columbian origins and Spanish colonial grandeur to its emergence as the first city in the world to receive UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 1978. The afternoon then carries the journey to one of the world's most symbolically powerful landmarks: the Middle of the World, where the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet at Latitude 0°.

The journey

Highlights

  1. Step01

    Plaza Grande

The historic heart of Quito is flanked by the Archbishop's Palace, the Government Palace, and the National Cathedral. A square that has witnessed five centuries of Ecuadorian history and shows every remarkable moment of it.

  2. Step02

    La Compañía de Jesús

The crown jewel of baroque architecture in the Americas. Entirely gilded interior, spectacular altars, and views from the domes across Quito's rooftops that stop every visitor in their tracks.

  3. Step03

    San Francisco Church

The largest colonial structure in Quito was begun just weeks after the Spanish established the city in 1534. Its baroque main altar, original tilework, and Moorish-influenced roof speak to the extraordinary cultural complexity of colonial Ecuador.

  4. Step04

    El Panecillo

Home to the tallest aluminum statue in the world, the Virgin of Quito, and sacred to the Inca and local peoples long before the Spanish arrived. The views from the hill are nothing short of spectacular.

  5. Step05

    Lunch at Restaurante Pims

A pause at one of Quito's most emblematic restaurants before the afternoon's adventure begins.

  6. Step06

    The Middle of the World

The country's very name traces back to the French Geodesic Mission that determined the equatorial line runs through Ecuador. Inside the iconic Equatorial Monument, interactive exhibits on the Geodetic Mission, solstices, equinoxes, and Ecuador's four worlds bring the story of Latitude 0° brilliantly to life.
